Ma-Yi Theater Company

For nearly two decades, Ma-Yi Theater Company has impressed and influenced audiences with its OBIE Award-winning productions. Committed to the development and production of original works by Asian American playwrights, Ma-Yi’s cultural force is used to launch an underrepresented community of artists from an equitable platform.

By staging innovative plays, Ma-Yi Theater Company has made a name for itself in any discussion of contemporary theater or Asian American identity. Since 2009, Ma-Yi Theater Company’s stake as a principle player in the game of theatrical productions has only become greater.  That year, the organization committed to only produce work generated by its Writers Lab.  Funded by Time Warner Foundation, the Ma-Yi Writers Lab’s groundbreaking work continues to  push boundaries of storytelling  and inject the theatrical arena with emerging talent including Carla Ching (“Sugar House at the Edge of the Wilderness”), Jiehae Park (“Peerless”) and Qui Nygugen (“Soul Samurai”).

The Writers Lab supports developing artists with workshops, readings, retreats, and community outreach.  Each year, two of the works supported in the Writers Lab at Ma-Yi see full productions. The company has seen great progress in building a network of and providing opportunity for new writers.
