Playwrights Horizons

Playwrights Horizons approaches theatre from the angle of the writer.  This unique filter allows Playwrights a singular identity as they enrich a full pot of offerings on the city’s many stages.  In addition to a special 2008 Drama Desk award for “ongoing support to generations of theater artists and undiminished commitment to producing new work,” Playwrights Horizons has won the high esteem of audiences and artists of all stages in their career.

Time Warner Foundation supports this first-in-class record of excellence with funding for the New Works Lab and Writer’s Fund.  The New Works Lab is the system Playwrights Horizons has in place for developing new plays and musicals every season.  The grantee serves emerging female, minority, and LGBTQ writers.

The Lab supports inclusive perspectives from script to stage. Contemporary theatre continues to strive for being fresh and representative of its audience, so it is with pride that Time Warner Foundation helps Playwrights Horizons to achieve that goal.

The New Works Lab reviews unsolicited script submissions and partners artists with members of Playwrights Horizons’ literary staff to evaluate then elevate the work.  Advising, immediate work development, long-term artist development, resources, and adaptability are components of this one-of-a-kind program.  The Writer’s Fund supplements this adaptability by allowing Playwrights Horizons to meet special needs of the artists which may fall outside of the standard budget on a case by case basis.
