Cara Mía

Founded in 1996, Cara Mía Theatre Co. is a non-profit theatre company that presents live accessible theatre by producing critically acclaimed published plays and creating new and experimental works while developing innovative and educational youth arts programming reflective of the Latino experience in the U.S. Cara Mía Theatre Co. has made a commitment to a value system that supports an original aesthetic, excellence in practice, cultural authenticity, and social justice. Cara Mía Theatre Co. uses these values to unearth history, expose injustice, create new perspectives, and give voice to underrepresented communities. In order to increase transformative experiences to the theatrical offerings, Cara Mía Theatre Co. connects in-depth Community Action programs to all productions through subsidized tickets, student nights, study guides, talkbacks, and extended community conversations.

In partnership with the The Time Warner Foundation, Cara Mía Theatre Co. was able to support its first national tour of the production, Deferred Action, originally co-produced with Dallas Theater Center. As a culturally specific institution, Cara Mía Theatre Co. recognizes the power of representation in storytelling. Deferred Action has become a Cara Mía Theatre Co. signature production as it speaks to the highly politicized issues surrounding Latinos in politics, immigration reform, and the DREAMers (undocumented youth brought to the United States by their parents). At a moment in history when DREAMers’ protections to live legally in the United States through DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) are vulnerable to universal termination, Cara Mía Theatre Co.'s touring production travels through North Texas cities (Dallas, University Park, Denton, and Houston) and to Los Angeles for the 2017 Encuentro de las Americas. Cara Mía Theatre Co. values this incredible opportunity to engage communities through a highly-theatrical production. Time Warner Foundation's commitment has helped support Cara Mía Theatre Co.'s efforts to produce this play in the home communities of the Latina/o demographic.
