Staging Chicago theatre for over ninety years, Goodman Theatre opened its most recent facility in December 2000 with a revitalized commitment to exploring and enriching the theatrical community with new works as well as classic theatre. Recognizing the importance of the arts within society, the Goodman has actively pursued new play development in an effort to leverage its position in the American theater to nurture stories and storytellers who will promote vibrancy in the artistic community.
Of the six works in Goodman Theatre’s 2016/2017 season, four were products of in-house development initiatives. This is a testament to the success of the Goodman as a leading force, reinvigorating the American theatrical tradition. In partnership with the Time Warner Foundation, Goodman Theatre supports a new edge to this artistic commitment through New Stages Festival, which presents risk-taking, innovative works by diverse playwrights. New Stages creates space for playwrights to workshop and present its plays to audiences while in-development through public readings and productions.
This strategic partnership with Time Warner Foundation positions the Goodman to showcase talented storytellers at different stages in their careers.
